TRANS Project, 2017
"The Aesthetics Of Survival" reflects on the "feminine artifices" used by the great majority of transsexual women as an attempt to adapt to heteronormative heterogeneous society and, consequently, to survive the still existing patriarchy. Long hair, makeup, clothing considered feminine, high heels, in addition to extreme body modifications through regular use of hormones and aesthetic surgeries are just some of the tactics used by trans women as a way to preserve their dignity and even save their own lives.
Although with the feminist revolution, the emergence of genderless fashion and advances in the field of gender studies, the rites of femininity continue to limit the definition of what it is to be a woman. At a time when gender and beauty standards are still shaped by remnants of patriarchalism, a social system that reinforces gender roles, the "level of femininity" can often be the differential point between life and death.
